A team of Australian scientists on Wednesday claimed that they have successfully developed a “lab-grown” version of coronavirus.
The “lab-grown” version of coronavirus was the first to be recreated outside of China.
Australian scientists from the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne said that they would share their sample with the World Health Organization as well as laboratories around the world. The said sample was grown from an infected patient.
As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corp., a laboratory in China had successfully grown the virus, yet only the genome sequence was released instead of the sample itself.
In a statement, Julian Druce, the Doherty Institute’s virus identification laboratory head, said that they can have the ability to actually validate and verify all test methods, as well as they would be able to compare their sensitivities and specificities. Julian added that the said virus “will be used as positive control material” for the Australian network of public health laboratories and also shipped to expert laboratories who were working with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Europe.
According to Peter Doherty Institute, the Australia-grown virus sample would be used in order to generate an antibody test, in which this would allow detection of the said virus in patients who had not shown symptoms. The institute added that the virus was grown from a patient who had arrived at the institute last January 24.
