In a report on CNN Philippines, Galvez expressed optimism that the government can reach its target of inoculating up to 70 million people in the country by the end of 2021, hoping that a “better Christmas” was in sight for Filipinos this year.

Galvez told CNN Philippines’ The Source that government officials aimed to ramp up the country’s weekly vaccination numbers.

According to Galvez, the government targeted an average of 1 million vaccinees per week starting April 2021, which will then be increased to 2 million vaccinees per week in May 2021, which will then be increased to 3 million to 5 million vaccinees per week in June 2021.

Kasi po ang nakita po namin, kailangan tumaas po ang ating average na 3 to 5 million per week para po makuha po natin ‘yung 70 million. Sa computation po namin, kaya po, kaya po (ang target). Ang target po namin—we will have a better Christmas this year,” Galvez said.

Galvez also explained that healthcare workers nationwide decided to pace the process of administering the COVID-19 vaccines in order to monitor possible adverse effects.

The Philippines launched its inoculation drive earlier this month following the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines from Sinovac and AstraZeneca, with healthcare workers and some government officials getting the first vaccine shots.
