Bamboo Bike Frame Goes Viral, Offers Benefits For Environment, Cyclists
BAMBOO BIKE FRAME – Amid the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a massive shift in the way we travel.
Currently, several restriction were imposed to curve the spread of COVID-19 in the Philippines. As such, many Filipinos made a shift from commuting and invested in bikes to travel.
Since the start of the lockdowns, the demand and attention biking got had an exponential growth. With this, more and more people got into biking. However, a new type of bike has now made rounds on social media.
A Quezon City based cyclist now residing in Cebu created his own bike frames made out of bamboo. According to an article from CDN, Erwin Livelo has advocated the use of bamboo bike frames since 2013.
“Bamboo bikes are eco-friendly since the carbon footprint in manufacturing is much lower than other frames of different materials. It’s a renewable source of building material since we have an abundant supply of bamboo.“
Furthermore, he explained that bamboo absorbs vibrations well enough while riding. Along with this, he claimed that bamboo is stronger than steel in terms of tensile strength.
As per the article, Livelo said it takes him at least two weeks to finish one bamboo bike frame. To make the frames, he uses bamboos as the main tube and uses aluminum as inserts. Afterward, hemp fiber is wrapped around it to complete the frame.
