During the virtual briefing, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire on Monday said that they learned last week that AstraZeneca withdrew its application because apparently they’re able to meet the sufficient number required from them to finish their human clinical trial.

We are already having negotiations with AstraZeneca. So, the next step would be an application for an emergency use authorization here in the country, if ever,” Vergeire said.

It was last Friday when the Food and Drug Administration in the Philippines (FDA Philippines) told ABS-CBN News about AstraZeneca’s decision — to withdraw its application for COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials.

So far, AstraZeneca was the only company that had a supply deal with the Philippines as it was signed last November by the private sector and the government.

According to Vergeire, AstraZeneca can apply for regulatory approval for the distribution of their COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials with the Food and Drug Administration and the Health Technology Assessment Council.

Vergeire also said that vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. was in close coordination with the business sector for an additional support.
