Vatican Says Pope Francis Test Showed “Slight” Kidney Problem

POPE FRANCIS – Vatican said in a statement that the Roman Pontiff remains in a critical condition in a Gemelli hospital in Rome.

The Catholic churches are now monitoring the updates about the health condition of the Pope who is currently confined in Gemelli hospital in Rome, Italy. He experienced chest pains, thus, he was brought to the hospital last February 14, 2025 and was admitted.

The Roman Pontiff is confined in a special papal suite in Gemelli hospital in Rome. He suffered from bronchitis which developed into pneumonia. The Pope had a part of his lungs removed when he was young and it affects his current health condition.

Previously, it was reported that Pope Francis was diagnosed with a “focal pneumonia” which means that a limited part of his lungs are affected. Amid his hospital confinement, the Supreme Pontiff was vocal about his belief that he may not live longer.

Pope Francis even told two (2) people close to him that he might “not make it this time”. The 88-year-old Roman Pontiff previously expressed that his burial site if he dies is ready. Vatican also started with a funeral rehearsal for the Pope in case of his demise.

Reportedly, the Swiss Guard is under a curfew over the possible death of the Pope. On the 7th day of his hospital confinement, the clinical condition of the Sovereign Pontiff showed “slight” improvements. However, the doctors of the Pope admitted that the Pope is not out of danger.

According to Professor Sergio Alfieri, the Pope is moving between his bed and his chair and he also visits an adjacent chapel to pray. He admitted that the risk is if the germs pass into the blood of the Pope as it may lead to sepsis which can be fatal.

However, on Saturday, Pope Francis experienced respiratory attack which left him in a critical condition. The prognosis of the 88-year-old Roman Pontiff required the transfusion of two (2) units of blood. His condition required monitoring.

Based on a report on GMA News, Vatican issued a statement containing an update on the condition of Pope Francis who is still confined in the Gemelli hospital in Rome. The Roman Pontiff remains in critical condition.

The blood tests of the Pope also showed “slight” kidney problem as “an initial, slight renal insufficiency, which is currently under control” was found.

Meanwhile, according to Vatican, the Pope has not suffered from further respiratory crises since Saturday night. He reportedly remains “alert and well-oriented”. He is also getting a “high-flow oxygen therapy”.
