Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte Set To Join Senatorial Race in 2025
RODRIGO DUTERTE – The former President reportedly cancelled his bid for Davao City Mayor and is set to run for senator instead.
The Dutertes are among the most popular politicians in the Philippines. Currently, their family member with the highest position in the government is Vice Pres. Sara Duterte who previously announced that three (3) Dutertes will run for senator in 2025.
According to Vice Pres. Duterte, she was told by her mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman, that former Pres. Duterte and her brothers, Paolo and Baste, will vie for senator. It was welcomed with different reactions from the people.
There are a lot of Filipinos who support the Dutertes and there are also those are not in favor of having too many members of a family in politics. Since the announcement, countless Filipinos are wondering about the final decision of the Dutertes.
On Monday, former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte filed his candidacy for mayor in Davao City with his son, incumbent Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte, as his running-mate. Prior to it, Senator Bato dela Rosa who is close to the Duterte family said that Baste will run for senator if his father takes the mayoralty race in their hometown.
Months prior to the filing of candidacy, there are also reports about many people calling for the former President to run for senator. However, when he filed his bid for Davao City mayor in the 2025 Elections, the former Chief Executive said that he cannot anymore take the strenuous national campaign if he runs for senator next year.
Baste Duterte is also vocal of his support for his father saying that he has a rare and effective type of governnance. He believes that the former Chief Executive still has the wisdowm that he can share to the people.
However, based on a report on Manila Standard, former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte cancelled his bid for mayor in Davao City. Instead, he is set to run for senator in the 2025 Midterm Elections.
Citing a DZRH radio report, former Pres. Duterte has withdrew his COC for Davao City mayor and is set to file his COC for senator at the Manila Hotel City Tent where the Commission on Elections (Comelec) set up a temporary office for the submission of candidacies.
Duterte’s son, Paolo Duterte, will seek re-election as Davao City’s First District Representative. Duterte’s grandson will also run for Davao City councilor.
