The American game of baseball is where the phrase “charley horse” first appeared. It was initially used in the late 19th or early 20th century (going back to the 1880s). Baseball players Jack Glasscock and Joe Quest are recognized as the creators. However, a number of genesis explanations have been put forth.
According to one account, the term “charley horse” originated from a lame racehorse whose name was eventually forgotten. Another explanation connects it to pitcher Charley “Old Hoss” Radbourn, who was renowned for having cramps. It’s thought that the disease and his name may have been related.
