The first recorded use of the expression in print dates back to 1918 and appears in The Syracuse Herald, a newspaper that was published in the early 1900s. The phrase first appeared during World War II, when it was reported that the enemy had been attacked with everything but the kitchen sink. This led to the false assumption that the expression was created during World War II.
The phrase “everything but the kitchen stove” is a predecessor to this one and first appears in the Jeffersonville National Democrat in 1894. The current phrase probably evolved from this earlier phrase.
