The idiom “scared to death” was more than just a cliché on December 27, 2001. It has been proved by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, that humans can truly be terrified to death. Therefore, in addition to being fiction, it can also be fact.

It has its roots in Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes tale The Hound of the Baskervilles. In the narrative, Sir Charles Baskervilles suffers from an uncontrollable case of a heart attack. An emotional response that can be either positive or negative is being scared to death. When this occurs, there is an increase in autonomic activity, which results in the brain releasing hormones called adrenaline, which can have both positive and negative effects.
