The idiom “roll with the punches” has been used as a metaphor in boxing for many years and is thought to have originated in the sport. Boxers will attempt to position themselves in various ways throughout a fight to lessen the impact of incoming blows.
By rotating their bodies and heads back toward the path of the punch, fighters can “roll” with the impact. As a result, the strike will be less damaging than if it were delivered in full force. For instance, in response to a left punch from the opponent, the boxer will move his body and head back to the left.
