Fewer Lights This Year: Isko Moreno Explains Manila’s Budget-Friendly Christmas
ISKO MORENO – Manila residents were stunned after Mayor Isko Moreno publicly apologized for the lack of Christmas decorations across the city this holiday season.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso has issued an apology to the public over the visibly minimal Christmas decorations around the city this holiday season. The mayor explained that the local government had to make difficult financial decisions, prioritizing essential expenses over elaborate festivities.
Domagoso shared that he chose to channel the city’s funds into social aid programs and the settlement of debts inherited from the previous administration. These obligations, he noted, involved millions in unpaid bills for electricity, internet, telecommunications, and water services that had accumulated before he took office.

According to the mayor, the city was supposed to spend P14 million for Christmas decorations this year. Instead, he opted to withhold the expenditure in favor of providing more meaningful assistance to residents and stabilizing the city’s finances. The mayor emphasized that practical spending should take precedence, especially in a time when many families continue to struggle financially.
“Pasensya na kayo, ha? Wala akong ilalagay na parol sa buong Maynila. Pagpasensyahan n’yo na ako, eh kasi that would cost P14 million. Eh, ayaw ko namang makapamuhay nang marangya tapos magdadahilan ako sa inyo ng ‘nganga,” he said, underscoring his commitment to transparency and responsible governance.
Domagoso further highlighted the importance of focusing on family and togetherness this Christmas season, stating that these values matter more than extravagant decor. By redirecting funds toward essential programs, he hopes to help more Manileños feel the real spirit of Christmas through aid and support rather than displays.

He also reminded the public that the administration has already taken steps to clear significant outstanding debts left by the past leadership. These include payments for various utilities, which he believes are crucial for maintaining smooth operations and service delivery across the city.
Despite the lack of traditional holiday sparkle in Manila’s streets, Domagoso assured residents that the city government remains committed to providing what people truly need. His apology and explanation aim to encourage understanding, as he continues to prioritize financial stability and public welfare over grand seasonal decorations.
