The Painful Reason Shuvee Etrata Entered Barangay Pageants
SHUVEE ETRATA – Behind Shuvee Etrata’s bright smile lies a story of sacrifice and struggle — she once joined local beauty pageants not for fame, but simply to earn enough money to buy rice for her family.
Former Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition housemate Shuvee Etrata has revealed the heartbreaking reason she began competing in local barangay beauty pageants — to win money so her family could afford rice.
In an upcoming episode of the GMA drama anthology Magpakailanman, Etrata shares the struggles of growing up as one of nine siblings in a financially challenged household. She recalled that even the consolation prize of ₱500 meant a great deal, as it was enough to put food on the table for the day.

Shuvee Etrata’s candid story was also featured in GTV’s Balitanghali, where Etrata expressed gratitude for the opportunities that have come her way since her stint in PBB. “I’m just really happy that I’m finally able to help my family,” she said, acknowledging the contrast between her current blessings and her past hardships.
The television special will also delve into another emotional chapter of her life — her decision to stop pursuing college despite having a generous sponsor. A Swiss couple, whom she considers like her second parents, had offered to finance her education. However, the family’s constant need for financial support meant her allowance often went toward household expenses instead of tuition fees. This eventually led to an unpaid balance and the difficult choice to drop out.
Etrata’s journey is one of resilience, resourcefulness, and selflessness. From a young girl entering pageants not for glamour but for survival, she has now become a familiar face on Philippine television, inspiring others with her determination.
Shuvee Etrata’s story highlights the realities faced by many Filipinos who make personal sacrifices to support their families, as well as the transformative power of perseverance.
Viewers will witness her full life story on Magpakailanman this Saturday at 8:15 p.m. on GMA Network, offering a closer look at the challenges that shaped her and the strength that carried her forward.
