Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero To File Bill over Contractors for Government Projects
CHIZ ESCUDERO – The retained Senate President will file a bill that bans the relatives of public officials up to 4th degree from being government contractors.
With the opening of the 20th Congress, the members of the Senate and the House of Representatives have voted on who will take the leadership in each chamber. The elections in the upper and lower houses were held hours prior to the Marcos SONA 2025 which took place in the afternoon of July 28.

In the House of Representatives, Speaker Martin Romualdez managed to remain in his seat as the chief of the lower chamber. In the Senate, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero also remained his post for the 20th Congress after securing 19 votes from his fellow senators and himself.
Escudero won against Sen. Tito Sotto in the election for the Senate presidency. Sotto is also a former Senate president who lead the upper chamber during the 18th Congress.

As he remains in his seat, based on a report of GMA News, one of the bills that Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero plans to file is the measure that will ban the relatives of public officials up to the 4th degree from being contractors for the projects of the government.

”Para sa akin, klarong conflict of interest ‘yun at hindi dapat pinapahintulutan ‘yun,” the Senate President said.
The senators will have their session today and they are expected to tackle their plans and goals for the 20th Congress. Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero also previously confirmed that there is a huge chance that they will talk about the impeachment case of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.

The Supreme Court has declared the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte as “unconstitutional”. According to the high court, the impeachment complaint against the Vice President did not follow the one year ban rule with regards to impeachments.
Previously, the spokesperson of the Senate said the senator judges will vote on whether or not to push through with the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. The senators have different sides on the decision of the Supreme Court but have all affirmed respect to the high court.
Malacañang also claimed it respects the ruling of the court but it does not necessarily mean that it agrees with it. Recently, House Speaker Martin Romualdez asserted the “exclusive” duty of the chamber to initiate impeachment and called on the members of the House to not meet the ruling with just silence.
