Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero Speaks on Looming Impeachment Trial of VP Sara Duterte

CHIZ ESCUDERO – The Senate President called on his fellow senators to refrain from giving their stand on the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.

Last February 5, the House of Representatives impeached Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. The Vice President is surrounded by issues and accusations including the issues regarding the spending of the Confidential Funds of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and the Department of Education when she was the DepEd secretary.

Recently, speaking during the Kapihan sa Senado, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero reiterated his call to the senators to refrain from expressing their stand on the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. Based on a report on GMA News, the Senate Chief said it is a rule that senators should not give categorical stand over the matter.

“Ayon sa rules sana iwasan nila na magbigay ng categorical na posisyon o sagot kaugnay nito hanggat hindi pa nagsisimula ang trial at wala pa silang nakikitang mga ebidensya pabor o kontra sa nasasakdal na si VP Sara,” he said.

Based on the report, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero also downplayed the influence of endorsement in the Philippine politics. According to him, based on history, there were instances when politicians turned their back from people who endorsed them and there were also enemies who became friends.

“Nakita niyo naman sa social media na nagbago bago ng posisyon ang mga in-endorse dati, kinakalaban na nila ngayon ang nag endorse sa kanila dati, ‘yung kalaban nila dati kakampi na nila ngayon,” the Senate President said.

Escudero stressed that stance changes based on the situation of a person — “To each his own,” he said. Previously, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero previously showed the official robe that he will use in the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.
