Comelec Issues Reminders for Election Candidates amid School Graduation Rites Season

ELECTION – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) warned that disqualification from the May polls await candidates with posted campaign materials at graduation rites.

The May 2025 Elections are fast approaching. Both local and national elections are set to be held and the Filipinos will once again have the time to practice their right to suffrage. Currently, both the local and national campaigns are ongoing.

This election, several huge political parties in the Philippines have merged and formed the Alyansa Para Sa Pagbabago. The grand alliance is led by President Bongbong Marcos. However, amid the political turmoil in the Philippine government caused by the unexpected arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, presidential sister and Senator Imee Marcos has officially left the Alyansa led by BBM.

According to Sen. Imee Marcos, she will just join her friends in the local elections in their campaigns. She previously claimed that the recent actions of the government does not align with her ideals and principles in life. With regards to the campaign period, the Commission on Elections recently raised a reminder for the candidates.

Based on a report on PhilStar, COMELEC reminded the candidates of the May 2025 Election that posted campaign materials at the school graduation rites can result disqualification. Comelec Chairman George Garcia stressed that campaign materials are not allowed in the school premises.

According to COMELEC chairman George Garcia, incumbent government officials can be invited and can attend to graduation ceremonies. Most often, the officials are being invited as guest speakers. The poll body’s chairman stressed that officials should give speeches that praise the students and not campaign in front of the graduates.

The local and national elections are scheduled on May 12, 2025. The May polls is held every second Monday of the said month as synchronized national and local elections are mandated under Republic Act 7166. Like the previous local and national elections, it is set to be fully automated.

There is a huge populace of overseas Filipino workers around the world. Regarding their voting schedule, the OFWs can start casting their votes from April 13 until May 12.

Amid the political turmoil in the Philippines, as he endorsed the bets of the administration in the senatorial race, Pres. Bongbong Marcos has changed the chant of the Alyansa since the departure of Senator Imee.
