Bato Dela Rosa Changes Stance on ICC Surrender: ‘Why Will I Surrender?’

Bato Dela Rosa Reverses Position on ICC Surrender

BATO DELA ROSA – Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa backtracks on ICC surrender, questioning, “Why should I surrender?”

Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa has backtracked on his earlier statement about surrendering to the International Criminal Court (ICC) if a warrant for his arrest is issued. Dela Rosa, who was the chief enforcer of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial war on drugs, initially declared that he was prepared to face the ICC. However, his recent statements suggest a shift in position.

On Wednesday, Dela Rosa told reporters that he is now considering evading arrest if the Supreme Court rejects his petition challenging the Philippine government’s decision to hand over Duterte to the ICC. “If I no longer see justice here in our country, why will I surrender?” Dela Rosa said in a phone interview.

When asked whether he would go into hiding to avoid arrest, Dela Rosa confirmed that it was one of the options he was considering. “That’s included in my courses of action. I’m considering that,” he said. He also mentioned that he might seek refuge in his Senate office if necessary.

Dela Rosa’s latest remarks contradict his previous statements made on March 12, where he expressed willingness to face the ICC if a warrant was issued. “If there is a warrant, I’m ready. I’ll take care of the President. That is my purpose. I’ll submit myself if there is a warrant,” Dela Rosa said at the time.

Dela Rosa’s involvement in Duterte’s war on drugs has placed him under the ICC’s radar, with the court investigating alleged crimes against humanity committed during the anti-drug campaign. The senator has repeatedly defended Duterte’s actions, arguing that the drug war was necessary to maintain peace and order in the country.

Despite his new stance, Dela Rosa remains defiant, insisting that his decision will depend on how the Philippine justice system handles the case. His shift in tone reflects the growing political and legal tension surrounding Duterte’s ICC case and its potential impact on the country’s leadership.

Dela Rosa’s latest statements have sparked mixed reactions from both his supporters and critics, highlighting the ongoing debate over accountability and the rule of law in the Philippines.
