Marcos Playfully Teases Gatchalian About His Love Life

Marcos Jokes About Gatchalian’s Love Life

MARCOS – President Marcos playfully teased DSWD Sec. Rex Gatchalian about his single status, jokingly asking why he still doesn’t have a “jowa.”

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. shared a lighthearted moment with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) officials and employees during the agency’s 74th anniversary celebration at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. In a humorous exchange, he teased DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian for not having a love life, sparking laughter among attendees.

During his speech, Marcos commended the agency’s Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), which provides Filipinos with skills and resources to improve their economic opportunities. In a witty remark, he jokingly suggested that Gatchalian, 46, might need a “Sustainable Lovelife Program” instead.

“With the implementation of the Sustainable Livelihood Program or SLP, we empower our fellow Filipinos with the skills, with the resources, most importantly, the knowledge to improve their livelihoods – whether through micro-enterprises or stable employment,” Marcos stated.

He then humorously clarified that the SLP was not designed to address matters of the heart. “This doesn’t mean ‘Sustainable Lovelife Program,’ OK? Someone might ask, ‘Sir, is there training for hearts that always lose?’ You know, those – those personalities without a significant other (jowa). Just like your secretary,” he quipped in Filipino, drawing amusement from the audience.

Continuing his playful banter, Marcos remarked, “Our Secretary is too hardworking. He has no time for romance.” Despite the joke, he went on to praise Gatchalian and the entire DSWD team for their dedication, highlighting their 24/7 commitment to their duties.

“All of you – the Secretary, the Undersecretaries – even if I call at three in the morning, you still answer. I don’t even think you sleep anymore,” Marcos acknowledged, recognizing their tireless service.

Aside from the SLP, Marcos also highlighted the impact of other DSWD initiatives, including the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), the Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens, and the Quick Response Fund (QRF). He reported that over four million households benefited from the 4Ps last year, while 270,000 households received aid through the SLP in 2024. Additionally, the Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens supported 4.28 million elderly individuals, and over 7.4 million families received assistance through the QRF.

The anniversary celebration concluded with Marcos expressing gratitude for the DSWD’s relentless service, reaffirming the government’s commitment to social welfare and development in the country.
