Roderick Paulate Reflects on Dolphy’s Advice That Defined His Path in Comedy

The Philippines mourned a great loss on July 10, 2012, with the passing of Rodolfo Quizon Jr., affectionately known as Dolphy. Dubbed the King of Comedy, Dolphy brought joy to countless Filipinos through his iconic roles in movies and television.
He passed away at the age of 83 due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia. His legacy as an unparalleled entertainer lives on, inspiring generations of performers.
One such performer is Roderick Paulate, who, before gaining fame as one of the country’s finest comedians, was celebrated as a dramatic actor. In a recent interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Roderick reminisced about a pivotal moment in his career, crediting Dolphy for steering him toward comedy.
Roderick recalled an experience on the set of John and Marsha sa Probinsya, where his natural comedic timing caught Dolphy’s attention. “May ginawa akong scene… tawang-tawa sila,” Roderick shared. Dolphy, recognizing his potential, encouraged him to pursue comedy, saying, “Dick, yaw mo mag-comedy? Mag-comedy ka na lang. Ituloy mo na lang.”
Taking Dolphy’s advice, Roderick transitioned into comedy, starring in memorable films like Mga Anak ni Facifica Falayfay, Gorio and Tekla, and Petrang Kabayo. These roles cemented his status as a beloved figure in Philippine entertainment. Reflecting on Dolphy’s words, Roderick noted that the King of Comedy saw the need for fresh talent in the genre, a role he would come to fulfill with great success.
Today, Roderick continues to thrive in the industry, bringing laughter and inspiration to audiences. His latest project, Mga Batang Riles, premieres on GMA Prime on January 6, showcasing his enduring talent and dedication to entertaining Filipinos.
