The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or more popularly called PhilHealth also has its own share of controversy over its budget. Recently, countless Filipinos were surprised when it was announced that PhilHealth will get a zero subsidy for the year 2025.
Following the lawmakers from the Senate and the House of Representatives’ discussion over the budget appropriation for the different offices in the government in 2025, Senate Finance Committee chairperson Senator Grace Poe announced that PhilHealth will get a zero subsidy in 2025.
According to Sen. Poe, they have decided to not give a subsidy to the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation as they have huge reserve funds kept in a bank account. The Senator revealed that the reserve funds of the state-run health insurance provider may allegedly be around P600 billion.
PhilHealth has remained mum on the slashing of its subsidy in 2025. According to Sen. Grace Poe, the state-run health insurance provider will still be given its budget for its operation.
Recently, amid the issue surrounding the budget of PhilHealth, popular social media personal Dr. Tony Leachon slammed the state-run health insurance provider for its alleged spending for the PhilHealth Christmas Party and 30th Anniversary celebration.
In a social media post, Dr. Tony Leachon highlighted that P138 million was allegedly used for the PhilHealth Christmas Party and its 30th Anniversary celebration. He accused the leadership team of the state entity to not being wise in spending the funds.
Leachon called for a zero budget for PhilHealth. He also claimed that the Congress and the Senate allegedly do not want the PhilHealth officials to resign. Here’s his post:
Previously, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero has spoken on zero subsidy for PhilHealth. The lawmaker did not hesitate to express that the alleged lapses of the state-run health insurance provider has resulted to the decision of the lawmakers to not give it a subsidy for next year.
Escudero also stressed that PhilHealth failed to implement its mandate under the Universal Healthcare Law regarding the “no billing”. He took the huge amount of reserve funds of the state entity as an evidence on its failure to do its duties to the Filipino people.
