UE Manila Reacts After Awra Briguela’s School Uniform Sparks Controversy
AWRA BRIGUELA – The University of the East (UE) immediately responded after the school uniform of Awra Briguela sparked controversy.
Awra Briguela, a popular Filipino actor and social media personality, recently announced her official return to school. She shared a video proudly wearing a UE ID lace, followed by another where she donned her school uniform.
While many celebrated her return to education, her decision to wear the school uniform as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community became a hot topic online. Awra, who identifies as a transgender woman, drew mixed reactions on social media. Some users praised her confidence, while others criticized her choice.
In light of the growing controversy, UE Manila released an official statement addressing the situation. The university reiterated its strong commitment to gender equality and inclusion, ensuring that its campus remains a safe and welcoming space for students of all gender identities.
UE emphasized that their policy allows students to wear uniforms that align with their gender identity, as long as they obtain permission from the Student Affairs Office (SAO). This policy underscores the university’s support for the LGBTQIA+ community, ensuring that students like Awra can express themselves freely without facing discrimination.
The university also made it clear that negative comments and discriminatory actions will not be tolerated, as it firmly opposes gender-based harassment and any form of bullying.
UE’s statement went beyond defending Awra; it also called for greater awareness and respect. The university emphasized that ignorance cannot justify offensive or harmful remarks aimed at someone’s identity or self-expression.
Student groups, including the University Student Council, supported the administration’s message. They pledged to continue advocating for inclusivity and the creation of a safer, more accepting environment for all students. Awra Briguela’s return to school has thus sparked a broader conversation about the significance of diversity, self-expression, and the ongoing fight against discrimination in educational spaces.
