President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. marked the 35th death anniversary of his father, former President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr., with a heartfelt tribute on Saturday. In a touching social media post, the younger Marcos reflected on his father’s legacy, emphasizing his lifelong service to the Philippines and his dedication to the ideals of development, justice, unity, and nationalism.

The President highlighted his father’s unwavering faith in the Filipino people, stating, “Above all his beliefs was his faith in the Filipino people.”

This belief, according to Marcos Jr., was central to his father’s vision for the nation. Marcos Sr., who led the country for over two decades, was known for his advocacy of infrastructure development and strong national identity, although his administration was also marked by controversy, particularly during the Martial Law period.

The President shared that he has made a personal commitment to continue building on the foundation laid by his father. “I made a promise to honor his life’s work by building on this foundation,” he said.

In his message, Marcos Jr. expressed a deep sense of duty and responsibility in carrying forward the vision of his late father. He also reflected on the emotional bond between father and son, adding, “In some way, I hope that I have made you proud, Dad. We miss you every day.”

Ferdinand Marcos Sr. passed away on September 28, 1989, while in exile in Hawaii, following the historic 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution that ousted him from power. Despite the political upheaval, his remains were eventually repatriated and buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in November 2016, a decision that sparked both support and protest across the country.

The commemoration of the elder Marcos’ death anniversary serves as a reminder of his complex legacy and the ongoing influence of his family in Philippine politics, with his son now at the helm of the nation.
