President Bongbong Marcos has declared October 30 as a special non-working day.
PRESIDENT BONGBONG MARCOS – The President has declared October 30, 2023 as a special non-working day for this year’s Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
Signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on October 9, the President has issued Proclamation No. 359 declaring October 30, 2023 as a special non-working day throughout the country.
The Proclamation cited G.R Nos. 263590 and 263673 dated June 27, 2023 where the Supreme Court ruled that the BSKE set on the last Monday of October 2023 pursuant to Republic Act No. 11935 shall proceed as scheduled.
The President, in his Proclamation, said it’s imperative that people should be given the full opportunity to participate in the BSKE 2023 and exercise their right of suffrage.
“Now, therefore, I, Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, do hereby declare Monday, 30 October 2023, as a special (non-working) day throughout the country,” the President said.
On October 10, 2022, the President has signed into law the Republic Act No. 11935 amending Republic Act No. 9164 and postponing the originally set BSKE on December 5, 2022.
The election period started on August 28, which was also the 1st day of filing of certificates of candidacy (COC). A person will be considered a candidate the moment he or she files a COC and would only be allowed to campaign from October 19 to 28.
According to a report on ABS-CBN News, the Commission on Elections has placed 242 barangays in the “red category” ahead of the BSKE 2023.
