PRESIDENT BONGBONG MARCOS — The President said that late Migrant Workers Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople is a “perfect example” of true heroism.
The President said in his National Heroes Day speech at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on Monday that Ople tirelessly dedicated the better part of her life to promote the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). He even described OFWs as modern-day heroes.
“We have – we must mention a dear and departed friend who we can only describe as well as a hero and that is our good friend who we just lost, Secretary Toots Ople,” the President said. “And she is a perfect example of what true heroism can be.“

President Bongbong Marcos‘ message for National Heroes Day 2023
NATIONAL HEROES DAY 2023 — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. called on the public to remember the lesser-known and unnamed Filipino heroes who were important to shaping the Philippines.
The President said in a statement on Monday that it was easy for people to forget those unsung heroes given the number of possibilities Filipinos have.
According to the President, it’s “just as crucial” to remember the lives and deeds of lesser-known and unnamed Filipinos who played pivotal roles in shaping the country.
The President also called on the public to realize their own potentials to be heroes of communities. He emphasized that every Filipino has the capacity to be a hero of the country.
“Hence, on this year’s National Heroes Day. I enjoin every Filipino across the globe to celebrate with a renewed understanding and sense of pride for the fortitude that is naturally abundant in our hearts as a people,” the President said.
Apart from his message, the President led a commemorative program at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City on Monday, August 28, 2023. This year’s celebration focuses on the theme “Karangalan. Katungkulan. Kabayanihan.”
This year’s commemoration is pursuant to Administrative Code of 1987 (Executive Order No. 292, series of 1987) as amended by Republic Act No. 9492 designating the last Monday of August as “National Heroes Day”.
It gives Filipinos an opportunity to recognize the sacrifices of all Filipino heroes and to honor the bravery they exemplified for the country as well.
A series of activities is in full swing in order to commemorate the solemn occasion this year — including lectures, museum tours, exhibits, and wreath-laying rites, among others.
