In The Merchant of Venice, the expression “pound of flesh” was used. William Shakespeare wrote a novel titled The Merchant of Venice. In the 1600s, wealthy trader Antonio borrowed money from Shylock, a notorious moneylender, for his friend Bassanio.
Bassanio wanted the cash to win over Portia. Antonio decided to borrow money from his rival and enemy, Shylock, since his wealth was in the sea. They decided that Shylock would receive a pound of flesh from Antonio if the money wasn’t paid. When the debt wasn’t paid on time, a lawsuit was filed. Shylock was instructed to take a pound of flesh from Antonio during the hearing in accordance with the terms of the deal. Without spitting any blood, he was to take the exact amount.
Pound Of Flesh Meaning:
