The idiom is derived from the navy when piping down the hammocks on retirement day served as the cue. The first recorded use of the phrase was in “Gillespie’s Advice to Commanders & Officers” in 1798.
The phrase “please be quiet” has its origins in the captains’ practice of ordering the crew to speak into the deck space in order to maintain calm. The 1850 publication “The Gettysburg Star And Banner” is credited with coining the phrase with this meaning.
