Ecclesiastes 10:1 in the Bible is where the phrase “fly in the ointment” first appeared. It states: “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savor.”

The original meaning was very literal: Dead flies destroyed perfume or ointment by giving an unpleasant stench. However, the idiom became more figurative as it gained popularity.
