A British man is said to have used a slip of the pen for the first time in the 1650s. He had expressed his undying love for Lady Catherine, his love interest, in a letter. When Lady Catherine showed him the letter, she discovered that he had signed it “Within Love” rather than “With Love,” and when she told him about it days later, he had laughed and said, “Oh, it was just a slip of the pen.”

The phrase was well received and spread, and years later, around 1725, its sister phrase “a slip of the tongue” started to gain popularity as people began to make mistakes while speaking as well as writing.
