DICT on SIM registration: “We’re seeing maybe 30 days or 60 days into registration, we will start deactivating some services on the SIM card”
DICT – The Department of Information and Communications Technology is eyeing to remove some services of unregistered SIMs over the 90-day extension for the SIM registration period.
Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy said in a press briefing on Tuesday that subscribers who would fail to register their SIMs during the extension of the registration period might encounter a “gradual” loss of services.
According to Uy, the DICT has been talking with the telecommunications companies as regards to the SIM registration process during the 90-day extension of the registration period.
Uy also said that the DICT is exploring other options to incentivize registration because of the observation that people are not taking the deadline for the registration period seriously.
“We will observe the rate of registration and after a certain period, we’re seeing maybe 30 days or 60 days into registration, we will start deactivating some services on the SIM card,” Uy said. “Let’s say after 60 days, you will lose your access to your Facebook accounts or your TikTok accounts.”

The DICT secretary added that telcos already developed the availability of their systems so it wouldn’t be difficult for the public to register their SIMs. He then reminded the public that they can use barangay IDs to register their SIMs.
Uy also said that the DICT already identified some of the areas in the country where there was a “low turnout” of SIM registrants. According to him, they will be deploying more people and more resources to those areas for the registration in the next 90 days.
