This expression was used very literally the first time it appeared. In the first century AD, Pliny describes how his friend Cicero told him that he had seen a small version of Homer’s famous poem, Iliad, being created so that the entire poem, written on parchment, could fit inside the shell of a walnut.
As a result, the expression in a nutshell evolved to mean simplifying and condensing something that is so big.
