This idiom was first used in America during the Victorian era, from the late 19th to the early 20th century, and it is closely related to the expression “keep a stiff upper lip.”
The Pennsylvania newspaper The Evening Democrat’s October 1900 edition contains the earliest recorded mention: “Keep your chin up. Don’t take your troubles to bed with you – hang them on a chair with your trousers or drop them in a glass of water with your teeth.”
