Easy Money Definition, Sentence Examples
EASY MONEY MEANING – Find out what easy money really means. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.
The term “easy money” was first used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the context of economics and political reporting to describe a lending environment that is typical of economic downturns: banks are more willing to make loans because there is a relatively lower demand for credit. (see, for example, Earl Dean Howard and Joseph French Johnson, Money, and Banking, Volume 5, The Macmillan Company, 1910: p. 199).
However, during this same time, it also started to be used in the contemporary idiomatic and pejorative sense, which now refers to money obtained by unethical means.
Easy Money Meaning:
- Rewards, advancement, or other positive outcomes with little or no effort.
- When used negatively, it alludes to income that was obtained or provided in an unethical or dubious way.
- It can also be used to refer to money that is acquired with little work in a morally neutral way.
- When it’s not about the money, it’s about making minimal effort but still receiving rewards or results that are worthwhile of your time.
The original meaning of the phrase was to get quick money via deceit, fraud, or other unethical or criminal ways. Today, it describes any reasonably simple, worthwhile work.
