The idiom is derived from a story about a young shepherd. He kept calling the villagers and told them a wolf was attacking his sheep, but it was always a hoax. When a genuine wolf appeared, no one believed his cries, and the sheep were all attacked.
In 1692, it was adapted from one of Aesop’s tales. Aesop was a Greek storyteller who lived about the year 620 BCE. The moral is that even if a liar is stating the truth, no one believes him. Since the 1800s, it has been used to signal that a false alarm has been raised.
Cry Wolf Meaning:
- to continue begging for assistance even when you don’t need it. Nobody believes you when you actually need help.
- to assert that there is a problem when there is none. If a genuine problem arises, no one believes you.
