The term derives from boastfulness, which was intended to fool or entertain people. These types of stories were called Munchausens in the 1900s, after an actual person. He was well-liked since he was often telling outrageous stories about himself. Tall Tales were the tales told and retold around the campfire in the United States. It frequently involved mythological people accomplishing impossible things.

In the literary world, the phrase was first used in 1670 in John Eachard’s ‘The Grounds & Occasions of the Clergy’. This became more widespread in Routledge’s Every Boy’s Annual in 1869, which used the phrase as it is now understood.

  • something that is made up to be out of the believability range.
  • a story that makes claims based on false facts in order to make something appear larger than it is, also known as an exaggerated story
