In the year 1738, a writer named Francis Moore used this idiom in the publication titled ‘Travels into the inland parts of Africa’. It was not utilized in the way that it is now.
In 1858, ‘The Saturday Review’ used it to signify what it does today. The phrase is derived from “Maamajomboo,” a masked dancer in religious rituals. It was also the name of a West African God.
