William Tindale used it in his writing in 1526. The expression was revived and gained more popularity than before in the 1900s. The expression was created in 1929 by an Ohio newspaper to illustrate the get-rich-fast mentalities that were prevalent at the time. Filthy rich is no longer only used negatively; it can also refer to the degree of wealth.
