The idiom “down for the count” alludes to the boxing sport, in which a contestant is declared defeated if they are knocked down by their opponent and are unable to get back up before the referee counts to 10. Consequently, the boxer loses the match.

The phrase is used to suggest that something or someone is not working. The expression has been in use since the early 1900s. It can also indicate that someone has given up on a task and won’t be going back to it.
