JRU: “All privileges accruing to Mr. Amores as a student-athlete have been canceled”
JRU – Jose Rizal University has upgraded its decision on student-athlete John Amores from indefinite suspension to removal from the team.
In a statement, JRU said that along with his removal from the basketball team, Amores will no longer be a part of any sports program of the university, effective immediately. The university said that all privileges accruing to Amores as a student-athlete have been canceled.
Citing the university’s Student Manual, JRU said that Amores has been suspended from his classes and required to undergo community service as well. The University also said that it will provide counseling to the student-athlete “and help to cope with the strain of what has taken place in his young life.”
The university previously apologized for the incident that happened during their game against De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde last November 8. Also, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) previously slapped an indefinite suspension on the student-athlete.

On Monday, former basketball coach and Quezon City Representative Franz Pumaren urged the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to sanction the student-athlete regarding the incident.
In response, the SBP said that it is leaving to JRU and NCAA the necessary actions needed to be taken regarding Amores and the incident.
“We’d like to think that they are ran by professionals and right thinking officials so we give them kumbaga operational independence to police their ranks,” SBP director Sonny Barrios said.
Meanwhile, NCAA legal counsel Atty. Joseph Noel Estrada said that they welcome the points raised by Pumaren.
