Castles In The Air Definition, Sentence Examples
CASTLES IN THE AIR MEANING – Find out what castles in the air really means. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.
The idiom “castles in the air” initially appeared around 1500. Much of Spain was under Moorish rule, so the concept that a castle might be built there was an impossible dream. The idiom appears to have evolved from the original “To build castles in Spain.”
The original phrase was first used in the 13th century Le Roman de la Rose. In 1365, the English version was translated from the French original. The cultural allusion lost its meaning as time went on. In order to avoid confusion, it was modified to “castles in the sky” in its first recorded usage by author and translator William Painter (1540 – 1594)
