To recall, it was last 2018 when then-President Rodrigo Duterte signed the Philippine System Identification Act (PhilSys Act) into law, mandating the Philippine government to create a single official ID card for all Filipinos and foreign residents to have a single national ID number for all their transactions with the government.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said last year that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is producing at least 70,000 national ID cards per day, but has faced delays because of the deluge of registrants at that time.

In February, the PSA said that about 55 million Filipinos have registered in the national ID system but only 6 million ID cards have been released so far.

On Thursday, the President said in a social media post that in a meeting with NEDA Director General Arsenio Balisacan, they discussed how they can speed up the production of over 50 million national ID cards so that Filipinos can use those ID cards by early 2023.

The President gave the statement a day after his meeting with Socioeconomic Secretary Arsenio Balisacan, wherein the topic was discussed.
