Incoming DAR Chief Speaks on Possibility of Rice Selling at P20 per Kilo
INCOMING DAR CHIEF – Incoming Department of Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrado Estrella III said that the P20/kilo rice is not possible now.
One of the things that many people are hoping for under the next administration is the lowering of the prices of rice. Rice is a staple food in the Philippines and many Filipinos are really affected by its high costs.
Nowadays, a good quality rice is priced between P38.00 to P55.00 per kilo. There are families who can hardly eat three times a day due to the high costs of the basic goods and commodities in the country now.
During the campaign period, president-elect Bongbong Marcos expressed his desire for rice in the Philippines to be sold at P20.00. While many people is genuinely hoping for it, many individuals also believe that it is only an aspiration.
Outgoing Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) Secretary Bernie Cruz recently expressed that P20/kilo rice is possible in case the government will use a “megafarm”. On the part of incoming DAR chief Conrado Estrella III, he expressed that it is still not possible now and it really needs tough work to get to it.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the incoming DAR Chief said that P27/kilo or P28/kilo rice is more possible. Meanwhile, he assured that he is studying the possibility of dropping the selling price of rice to P20/kilo. He assured that they will really work hard to make it possible.
Estrella also stressed that Marcos Jr. did not really commit to drop the selling price of rice at P20 per kilo. According to him, the president-elect is realistic that it is an “aspiration”. Citing that the prices of oil and fertilizers now are high, the incoming DAR secretary stressed that it would really be hard to drop the per kilo price of rice.
