Netflix will reportedly make its games available on iOS via Apple App Store.
After rolling out a mobile gaming service for users with Android devices, Netflix will reportedly make its games available on iOS via Apple App Store.
Netflix officially got into gaming by recently rolling out a mobile game service for Android users earlier this month.
While Netflix said that it’s working on an iOS version of the mobile game service, Bloomberg tech reporter Mark Gurman said that Apple’s App Store policies will prevent Netflix from making games available from its app.
The Verge reported that the Cupertino giant barred third-party applications from functioning as a hub for games, which had become a point of contention with cloud gaming services.
According to a report, cloud gaming services can only get around that by way of offering their games via a web app.

As reported on Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, Netflix will tiptoe around Apple’s rules by making its games available via the App Store, which means, games won’t be playable or downloadable from the app and users will only be able to launch them from there.
Currently, the mobile game service functioned in that way on Android; the games were neatly packaged in a dedicated tab on the app, but were downloaded individually from the Google Play Store.
Although the said setup was fine, it wasn’t ideal for a mobile game service as users should be able to download and play games from within the service itself. This was the reason why Gurman predicted that Netflix will eventually bring its games to the cloud.
It wasn’t clear what will happen to the mobile game service on iOS if and when Netflix decided to embrace cloud gaming.
“Apple will need to change its rules or grant Netflix an exemption. That leaves the ultimate success of Netflix’s service in the hands of Apple, a longtime partner but also a growing rival,” Gurman said.
