Mayor Isko Moreno Speaks on Decision to Lift Mandatory Face Shield Policy in Manila
MAYOR ISKO MORENO – The Manila Mayor is standing by his decision to lift the mandatory face shield policy despite the Palace’s opposition.
Among the protocols that remain in implementation in the Philippines is the wearing of a face mask when going outdoors and the wearing of a face shield as required by certain establishments.
Shopping malls, hospitals, banks, and convenience stores are among those that require a face shield upon entry. However, in Manila, Mayor Isko Moreno is decided to lift the mandatory face shield policy.
The announcement of the Mayor was followed by a statement from the Palace asserting President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has the directive over the implementation of the mandatory face shield policy. Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque told the mayors to respect the process and the order of the President.
Mayor Isko Moreno is visibly determined to pursue the lifting of the mandatory face shield policy. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, he stressed that they have to do what they must do as mayor of the city.
According to the Manila Mayor, their duties as mayors require them to protect the interest of the people. He said that what the national government wants to do is “something that is not Science-based”. He stressed that many senior citizens trip and many asthmatic people because of the face shield.
Based on the report, Mayor Isko Moreno further stressed that the wearing of face shiels adds to the expenses of the people and it produces a lot of waste to the environment.
“Iyong basurang naidudulot nito sa kapaligiran. Plastic ito. Why? Why you keep on insisting, these people keep on insisting [the wearing of] face shield? What is there in face shield?” he said.
