Valve banned blockchain games and NFTs on Steam.

Valve recently banned games that used blockchain technology or let users exchange cryptocurrencies or non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on Steam.

Valve banned blockchain games and NFTs on Steam.

As stated in a rule added to Valve’s “What you shouldn’t publish on Steam” list under the Rules and Guidelines, games that used blockchain technology or let users exchange cryptocurrencies or NFTs won’t be allowed on Steam.

The Verge reported that the said change was pointed out by SpacePirate, who said that the change was because Steam didn’t allow game items that could have real-world value.

However, Steam could also be avoiding controversy with the said move.

NFTs allowed people to sell and buy ownership of unique digital items and keep track of who owned them using the blockchain. It can technically contain anything digital — including animated GIFs, drawings, songs, or items in video games.

Steam was one of the most well-known PC game stores, but it wasn’t the only one.

While Epic CEO Tim Sweeney had said that the company wasn’t interested in touching NFTs, that policy didn’t seem to apply to games in its store.

Epic told The Verge in an email Friday that the company was “open” to the idea of games that used cryptocurrencies or NFTs.

Although the company was open to the idea, Epic did note that there would be some limitations but they’re willing to work with the developers who engaged in this field.

Epic also shared that games would have to comply with financial laws, making it clear how the blockchain works, and have appropriate agings. The company added that the Epic platform wouldn’t accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment.

Steam and Epic’s different approaches highlighted the fact that any store or platform that moderated content will likely have to make a decision about whether it wanted to allow games or applications to sell NFTs.
