Former senator John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña died at the age of 86.
Former senator John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña, who was also a former city mayor of Toledo City in Cebu, died Tuesday at the age of 86.
In a statement, Annie Osmeña-Aboitiz confirmed that John died at the Maryville Condominium at 2:45 in the afternoon and his remains were then immediately cremated.
“Schedule of Holy Masses through zoom will be announced soon,” Annie said.

Toledo City Community Affairs and Development head Ferliza Calizar Contratista, who was also John’s media consultant, said that John was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer last July 2019, adding that he underwent chemotherapy and responded well to treatment.
John had tested positive and recovered from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) last June 2020.
In a report on GMA News Online, John remained active as he attended celebrations in Toledo — including the launching of “Pasko sa Toledo” and the gathering with his staff last December 24, 2020.
As per the report, John was “hospitalized January 9 and was discharged January 16” by his doctor, nephew Dr. Justin Osmeña.
John turned 86 years old last January 17, 2021.
He was survived by his son John Gregory Osmeña, his grandsons, his sister Annie Osmeña-Aboitiz, and his brother Gov. Lito Osmeña.
