Twitter announced its new “Birdwatch” initiative to fight misinformation
Twitter officially announced its all-new “Birdwatch” initiative for fighting the huge amount of misinformation on the platform.
In a report on 9to5Mac, “Birdwatch” was a collection of new crowdsourcing tools designed to allow Twitter users to flag tweets as misleading and to “write notes that provide informative context”.
Twitter was starting off its new initiative with a separate website that users can sign into with their Twitter credentials. It was clear that Twitter was excited about its new initiative, but was still not completely sure of its viability.
They noted in their press release that this was a pilot program, adding that it lived on a separate website specifically to allow them to determine if Birdwatch can truly help fight misinformation.

Birdwatch simply allowed Twitter users who discovered misinformation to “create notes that add context to Tweets” and it also allowed Twitter users to tell Twitter if they believed that a particular tweet may cause harm.
9to5Mac reported that notes won’t appear on Twitter itself for regular users at the moment, but users can use the new separate Birdwatch website in order to see notes about misinformation in tweets if they wanted to participate in the pilot program.
As per the report, all Twitter users were eligible to participate in the pilot program of Birdwatch. Twitter users can follow @Birdwatch on Twitter in order for them to keep up-to-date on the program.
Presumably, if the pilot program indeed did its job, Twitter will extend the moderation features to the core Twitter experience.
