DIALECTS IN THE PHILIPPINES – Being an archipelago, the Philippines is home to a variety of cultures, traditions, and of course, language.

Over 170 languages can be heard throughout the 7,100 islands in the country. Furthermore, several dialects are also spoken not by just a small community, but by a large portion of the population. As such, the Philippines holds a unique perspective on how tradition, culture, and geography affect language.

Currently, there are 8 major dialects spread across the Philippines. These are Bicolano, Cebuano, Hiligaynon,. Ilocano, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Tagalog, and Waray. Aside from this, the Philippine Embassy reported more than 111 dialects spoken in the country.

During the early days of the Philippines, Cebuano, the dialect originating from Cebu, spread across the Visayas. However, this dialect quickly caught on to neighboring islands and the northern and eastern parts of Mindanao.

The map merely represents the major dialects in each region. However, it must be noted that the southeastern parts of Mindanao is populated with a mix of Ilocano, Tagalog, and several other local dialects. But, Cebuano has become the dominant dialect in the area.
