BSP unveiled PHP 5,000 Lapulapu banknote and Lapulapu commemorative medal.
In honor of the 500th anniversary of Lapulapu’s victory in the Battle of Mactan, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday officially launched a commemorative PHP 5,000 banknote and a commemorative medal.
The banknote launch also kicked off a 99-day countdown to the actual anniversary this year 2021.
BSP Deputy Governor Francisco Dakila spoke at the launch event, discussing the salient features of the PHP 5,000 Lapulapu banknote.
The said banknote, according to Dakila, included an image of Lapulapu on the front of the banknote, an image of the Philippine Eagle at the back of the banknote, and the usual security features of the banknote.
It also depicted a coconut tree, a fruit of which was fed to Ferdinand Magellan and his crew; a Karaoka, a Filipino warship that was used during the time of Lapulapu; and a Mount Apo.

Although legal tender, the PHP 5,000 banknote was “not for circulation” and would only be available for purchase by the public.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas would issue a separate advisory in March 2021 for the guidelines on the procurement of the commemorative banknote.
In addition, the commemorative medal made primarily of silver features the Lapu-Lapu shrine in Cebu on the front, and the date “27 April, 1521” and the battle of Mactan at the back.
“The BSP and National Quincentennial Committee (NQC) have collaborated on this commemorative banknote and medal to celebrate the heroism of Lapulapu and his warriors, and to familiarize the present generation with the country’s rich pre-colonial history,” Dakila said.
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea had received a commemorative medal and banknote on behalf of President Rodrigo Duterte, who also shared a few words in a recorded video message, encouraging all Filipinos to emulate Lapulapu’s heroism.
The said event was held at the Fort San Antonio Abad in the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Complex in Manila.
BSP officer-in-charge Dakila delivered the message at the said event in place of BSP Governor Benjamin Diokno, who was recovering from a medical procedure performed yesterday in order to address a blood clot.
In a report on ABS-CBN News, the blood clot was caused by a minor head accident and no further details were given.
