Peru President Merino Resigns After 5 Days In Power
PERU PRESIDENT – Following several street protests against him, Peru’s President Manuel Merino resigns after just 5 days in office.
On Sunday, the 59-year-old President stepped down after a quick crisis session of Congress. During that time, Congress called on him to quit from his post before 6:00 p.m. or face censure.
Afterward, the Merino gave into the ultimate and told the entirety of Peru, “I want to let the whole country know that I’m resigning”. This was a day after a police crackdown on protesters caused the death of at least two people. As such, Congress was expecting to appoint a new president. This would be Peru’s third change in a week.
Thousands of residents took to the streets to protests against Merino’s presidency after ousting his predecessor Martin Vizcarra. According to Manila Bulletin, Vizcarra was impeached due to corruption allegations on Monday.
Meanwhile, Vizcarra welcomed Merino’s resignation as he questioned his own impeachment the week prior. As per the report, he said:
“It is essential that the Constitutional Court makes a statement urgently and say whether what the congressmen did on the 9th is legal”
