Jetliner Hits Brown Bear, Killing It, Leaving Cub An Orphan
JETLINER HITS BEAR – A Boeing 737-700 jetliner hit a bear walking down the runway as it landed in Yakutat Airport, southeast Alaska.
According to local reports, the incident caused no harm to the passengers. However, the poor animal was killed and the airplane was damaged. Meanwhile, authorities also found a cub that was a two years old which remained uninjured.
Based on a report from ABC News, the airport crew already cleared the runway 10 minutes before the airplane was expected to land. Furthermore, the plane landed after dark with the crew executing the basic procedures for runway checks.
But, the staff did not see any signs of wildlife as they checked the runway. Meanwhile, Pilots said they saw the two bears crossing the runway as they slowed down for landing.
As per the report, Alaska Airlines said:
“The nose gear missed the bears, but the captain felt an impact on the left side after the bears passed under the plane“
Moreover, the pilots said they saw the animal around 20 feet from the center of the runway. Afterward, the cowling jet’s left engine was left damaged due to the impact.
Still, this isn’t the first incident that a plane in Yakutat Airport hit an animal as they landed. Previously, deer, geese, caribou, and other animals were an issue. However, this was the first time a bear was reported getting hit.
