BIR warned public anew against cyber criminals.
The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) warned the public anew against the alarming activities of cyber criminals — including phishers and scammers.
This, as these cyber criminals started sending fake emails in order to extract confidential information for financial and other malicious purposes.
Lanee Cui – David, the Revenue Deputy Commissioner for Information Systems, issued an advisory again after spotting the resurgence of the racket which surfaced early this year.
“The BIR is not the victim here but the taxpayers”, David said.

According to David, cyber criminals posing as legitimate revenue officers were asking intimate information from their would-be victim’s username and password in the guise of reconciling his/her tax records.
David added that breaching a person’s website could cause serious physical and emotional distress.
She also pointed out that the bureau never asked its taxpayers to log-in their accounts on the BIR eServices through the embedded links.
David advised taxpayer not to click the attachment and link in case they received doubtful e-mail, adding that taxpayers should instead close the message immediately and delete it from their inbox.
According to her, they had been holding regular data privacy briefings and information security awareness especially among newly-hired personnel.
Meanwhile, the bureau wanted barangay officials to help field officers in serving notifications to taxpayers.
